And if you can’t shape your life the way you want,
at least try as much as you can
not to degrade it
by too much contact with the world,
by too much activity and talk.

Try not to degrade it by dragging it along,
taking it around and exposing it so often
to the daily silliness
of social events and parties,
until it comes to seem a boring hanger-on.

CP Cavafy

In a 24-7 world it’s useful to remember the value of quiet. This New York Times piece reminded me of it. (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/01/opinion/sunday/the-joy-of-quiet.html).

It quotes Philippe Starck on creativity. What allowed him to stay ahead of the curve? “I never read any magazines or watch TV. Nor do I go to cocktail parties, dinners or anything like that.I live alone mostly, in the middle of nowhere.”

If good writing is born of good reading, then perhaps good speaking is borne of silence and good thinking. Worth remembering in a noisy world.
